Basketball Theme Birthday Party Ideas
If your child loves basketball, showcase his passion for the sport by throwing him a memorable basketball-themed birthday party. Whether the birthday is celebrated on a basketball court, in a park or at home in the backyard, you can make it special with festive decorations, delicious refreshments, as well as games and activities that center around basketball. Does this Spark an idea?
Party Invitations
Let the birthday boy choose colors from his favorite basketball team. Send out party invitations that reflect the theme of the party. Purchase basketball whistles at novelty or party supply stores such as Oriental Trading or Party City (see Resources). Attach them to computer-designed and printed "game tickets" that include information about the birthday party.
Party Decorations
Decorate the party room where guests will gather with basketball-themed items such as posters of popular players, banners and a full-size display of a basketball player so guests can stand next to him and have their photos taken. Other ideas include using a real basketball as a table centerpiece. Paper supplies can also include jersey-shaped plates, themed napkins, basketball-printed table cover and disposable cups.
Party Favors
Prepare basketball-themed treat bags for each guest. Put in items such as basketball tattoos, stickers, basketball kick balls, pencils with basketball erasers, trading cards, basketball star gold medals, sports bottles, key chains or basketball printed can holders. Treats can include candy and fruit snacks.
Refreshments
Have a birthday cake shaped and decorated like a basketball either from a bakery that specializes in themed cakes or make one yourself. A young child might like to help decorate it. Refreshments can include food that might be eaten at a basketball game at an arena such as hot dogs, hamburgers, pretzels, potato chips and chili. Serve ice-cream bars with the birthday cake. You can also give fun names to the refreshments such as "Slam Dunk Nachos" or "Free Throw Fries."
Activities
Display a large clear jar filled with individually-wrapped basketball themed candy. Let guests guess how many are in the jar. The winner gets to keep the jar of candy as a prize. Young children can decorate foam basketball door hangers with peel-and-stick images. They can also play "Pin the basketball on the hoop" or a two-team relay game running with and passing the ball.
Divide older guests into two teams and play a game, tossing the basketball into a hoop or dribbling down the court. Or have each guest try free throwing the ball into the hoop blindfolded. A parent can dress as a referee with a whistle to direct the kids.
Guests can also come dressed in basketball jerseys or have a session of rigorous basketball camp exercises led by the birthday boy.
