Army Crafts For Kids

Kids can make their own dog tags

Kids' crafts engage the creativity of kids of all ages. They also improve fine motor skills by requiring kids to do precision tasks with their hands. Adding an Army theme to kids' crafts makes them ideal for military families, Veteran's Day, Memorial Day or as a rainy-day activity. Army crafts remind kids of the sacrifices soldiers make for all of us.

Dog Tags

Dog tags are commonly associated with the Army. The kids can make their own personalized dog tags in this craft. Cutting the tags from a disposable pie tin creates a realistic look for the dog tags. The kids can carve the details into the tin using a sharp object such as the end of a paper clip. Help the punch a hole and place a ball chain through it for a more authentic look. You can also use string or plastic lace for the chain. Another option for younger kids is to cut the tag shape from cardboard and paint it with silver paint. They can write directly on the cardboard tag and don't have to deal with sharp instruments.

Personalized Canteens

Let the kids decorate their own canteens as an Army craft idea. Look for plain canteens at discount stores or outdoor stores. The kids can paint the canteens, use glitter glue on them or cut out designs from craft foam and glue them to the canteens. The personalized canteens are ideal for playing outside, including any Army-themed games you might play, such as an endurance or obstacle course.

Tie-Dyed Shirts

While they won't look quite like real camouflage, you can make them somewhat resemble the pattern with a tie-dye project. Choose dye in brown and green to simulate the typical Army camouflage pattern. The kids can dip different parts of the shirt in the colors of dye to create the homemade camouflage design. Make sure you do the craft outside or protect the work surface carefully to prevent permanent staining from the shirt dye.

Homemade Face Paint

This craft allows the kids to make their own face paint. They can use it to paint their faces to resemble an Army soldier. There are several recipes available for homemade face paint. One simple option is to mix powdered tempera paint with a cup of baby lotion and a teaspoon of dish detergent. Another option is to mix 1 tsp. cornstarch, 1/2 tsp. of cold cream, 1/2 tsp. of water and food coloring to reach the desired color. Choose greens and browns for the coloring in the face paints. You can store the face paints in jars with tight lids.
