Classy Party Decoration Ideas

Tea-light candles make a great party decoration.

Throwing a party with a classy, upscale feel is possible at home or in a rented space. The key is to go with simple, elegant decorating ideas that add a slick feel to the room. You don't want anything over the top, but you definitely want to make a statement. Does this Spark an idea?

Candles Set Mood

Candles can add the perfect lighting to any occasion, from a dinner party to a birthday party. Tea-light candles can be displayed in small glass votive-candle holders or floated in a water bowl. If your party doesn't have a color scheme, choose ivory or a color in tune with the season. For a holiday fete, go with crimson and forest green; for a woman's 40th birthday party, think a soft shade of pink. Large pillar candles also look great on large candle stands.

To ensure the safety of your guests, keep large candles away from high traffic areas.

Photographs Add Class

Photographs in uniform frames can add a classy touch to a party. They serve as decorations, but also bring back memories for party guests. If you are throwing an engagement party, for example, enlist the help of the couple's parents to gather childhood photographs. Make photocopies at an office supply store and put them in uniform frames. Inexpensive frames can be purchased at a craft store and painted black for a posh look. If the event is going on in the daytime, stay with unfinished wood for a chic, yet approachable feel.

This also works for a birthday party and baby shower. For the former, you would focus on photos of the birthday guest's past; for a baby shower, display photos of the couple throughout the course of their relationship. Photos can be placed throughout the party to serve as conversation-makers.

Party Favor Decor

Party favors can double as decorations if they are stylish enough. Candles in jars can be lined up on a table, along with gourmet chocolates wrapped in fabric. If you are throwing a pool party, have pool goodies like bright flip-flops and sunscreen in canvas bags or laid out on a table for the taking. Fill spritz bottles with water and essential oils and keep them in buckets of ice, so guests can give themselves a fragrant shot to cool down during the party. Place buckets throughout the pool area so they serve as decor and are readily available wherever guests are.
