Cheap Christmas Vacations

Plan an inexpensive Christmas getaway this holiday season.

There are many popular Christmas getaway destinations. They include Hawaii, Paris and New York City. Unfortunately, these hot spots can be very expensive, especially if you have a large family. Instead of shelling out a huge amount of money on a pricey Christmas vacation, take your loved ones on an inexpensive, yet memorable, trip that will provide memories for years to come.

Swap Homes

One of the largest expenses of a traveling during the holidays is the price of the hotel. Many hotels and motels raise their prices during the holiday season because they know travelers are willing to pay. Cut out the expense of lodging by swapping homes with a friend or family member during the holiday season. You and your family will be driving or flying to a new destination while the other family will make their way to your home and town. There are also online agencies that deal specifically with home swaps so you and your family may be able to spend the Christmas season somewhere completely new and exciting.

Camping

Spend Christmas in the great outdoor by taking the family on a camping trip. Pack up the recreational vehicle or tents and drive to a national park or secluded forest oasis, if one is open in your area. Stay at the beach if you live in near an ocean or a lake in a warmer region of the country. You may need to travel a greater distance if you live in a colder climate that is not conducive to roughing it outdoors. Camping will save you a lot of money on lodging and transportation expenses, especially if you just choose to camp in your own backyard. Bring along all the necessary equipment, food and warm clothing required to ensure that no one needs to make a mad dash home for eggnog on December 24.

Stay Local

Explore a small town or large metropolis that is near your own home. Stay at a small bed and breakfast or rent a suite at a modest hotel. Visit all of the tourist destinations in this town that you have not seen before, even if you have lived in the area your entire life. Staying close to home will save on any airfare, gas or bus money that is required to travel a great distance. It will also allow you celebrate and share Christmas dinner with friends and family members that you would have otherwise not seen had you gone away for the holiday season.
