About Rehearsal Dinners

Now that the wedding has been planned, dress fittings are out of the way and the decorations are set in place, it is time for the long-awaited rehearsal dinner. Traditionally, rehearsal dinners play an important role in wrapping up all of the hard work that went into planning the wedding.

What Is the Rehearsal Dinner?

A traditional rehearsal dinner is a semi-formal or casual dinner that accompanies the final wedding rehearsal. In most cases, the rehearsal dinner will be held the night before the wedding. A rehearsal dinner serves as an opportunity for the couple to give their thanks and appreciation for the help of others with their wedding. A rehearsal dinner also allows for the families to meet and mingle, and for the wedding party to get to know one another better.

Who Attends the Rehearsal Dinner?

Some time ago it was said that the rehearsal dinner only included the wedding party and the immediate family members of the couple getting married. These days, many people, books and wedding magazines may say that the entire family should come. In any case, it is up to the bride and groom to decide who will come to the rehearsal dinner. If many out-of-town guests will be in attendance and will already be in town the night before the wedding, then it is nice to invite them, but not always necessary.

Payment

Ask the groom's mother if she would like to plan the rehearsal dinner. More often than not, she will be thrilled to take such an active role in the wedding planning. As tradition would have it, the groom's family is responsible for the rehearsal dinner, while the bride's family is responsible for the actual wedding. Though not many people follow tradition these days, asking your mother-in-law is worth a shot.

During the Rehearsal Dinner

Eating, of course, is something that you will do at the rehearsal dinner, but aside from that there are a few traditional things that follow. Appetizers are typically served until everyone arrives, and a few games can be played. Most rehearsal dinners will involve a toast before the main course is served. A video or slide show of photos can be played for guests to watch. Everyone who wishes should be allowed to speak and say something about the bride and groom. Dessert should be served, and any gifts should be presented at the end.

Where to Hold the Rehearsal Dinner

Think about your budget, the number of people who will be attending, and the taste of the bride and groom. A rehearsal dinner does not have to be a big formal event; it can be quite simple. If money permits, a nice hall or a banquet room at a hotel are good options. If not, a simple restaurant or even a backyard luau will do.
