Hawaiian Beach Games

Add fun games to your tropical Hawaiian-themed beach party.

Bring tropical paradise to your house by planning a Hawaiian beach party. Use some creativity to plan games that teach your guests about the Hawaiian traditions and culture without traveling thousands of miles to the beach. Games add to the beach atmosphere, while preventing boredom. Create games with simple rules to encourage everyone to play along.

Hawaiian Costume Contest

On your party invitations, tell your guests to come dressed in their best Hawaiian outfit. Give them some ideas like bright Hawaiian-themed shirts, grass skirts, coconut bras and flower leis. Award a prize to the best, silliest and funniest Hawaiian outfits. While the guests are in costume, host contests to see who can hula hoop for the longest amount of time. Award a prize to the winner.

Hawaiian Lei Toss

Spread a large tarp on the ground and scatter pineapples and coconuts all over the tarp. Mark a standing line about 10 feet from the tarp (adjust the line depending on the ages of the players). Have the players' line up at the standing line. Give each player five plastic Hawaiian leis to toss on the coconuts and pineapples. For each lei a player rings on a pineapple or coconut, award him a small Hawaiian prize.

Wheelbarrow Race

Use plastic wheelbarrows for children and real wheelbarrows for adults. Fill two wheelbarrows with inflated beach balls. Mark a starting line and finish line about 20 feet apart. Divide the players into two teams and have them line up at the starting line. Give each team a wheelbarrow filled with beach balls. When you say, "Race," the first player in each team line must push the wheelbarrow to the finish line and back. Each player in line must do the same thing. If a player drops a ball from the wheelbarrow, he must stop and pick it up before continuing the race. The first team to finish the race wins the game. If you do not have wheelbarrows, use wagons for this relay race.

Konane

Konane is similar to checkers and made with a wooden board. Make 36 indentions or color the squares different colors, just like a checkers board. Alternate black and white stones in every square on the board. Have one player grab a white and black stone from the center of the board and place them in his hands. He must mix the stones up and place one in each hand without looking. The other player picks one of his hands. If it is the black stone, he goes first. If not, the other player goes first. The players take turn jumping each other's stone and removing them from the board. The winner is the one who makes the last jump when no other moves are left.
